FAQs

Find quick answers to common questions about our dental services, procedures, and patient care in our FAQ section.

What can I expect during my first appointment?

Your initial appointment typically includes a complete examination, necessary x-rays, and a review of your medical history. Routine treatment plans may be discussed during this visit, but if you have a complex medical history or treatment needs, a follow-up appointment will be required to explore options.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring any x-rays taken by a previous dentist, a list of medications you are currently taking, and your dental insurance information, if applicable. Having these documents will save time and assist us in processing any claims efficiently. You may also request prior x-rays to be forwarded to our office.

What is dental prophylaxis and how often to I need it?

Dental prophylaxis is a fancy word that refers to thoroughly cleaning the teeth and gums to remove plaque, giving you fresher breath and a healthier smile. We recommend a cleaning two times a year as a preventative measure, but those who suffer from periodontitis should get this treatment every three to four months.

How do you prevent the spread of germs?

Infection control and universal health precautions are vital for the safety of our patients and staff. Our clinic follows guidelines recommended by OSHA, the EPA, and the CDC, which include using disinfectant hand soap, gloves, and face masks. We also chemically disinfect surfaces and sterilize all equipment with an autoclave, which is a machine that uses high heat, steam, and pressure to kill harmful microorganisms.

What is periodontal disease and why does it matter?

Three out of four adults are affected by periodontal, or gum, disease at some point in their life. This is caused by bacterial plaque, which constantly forms on your teeth and sticks to the gumline. Thoroughly brushing and flossing can help prevent gum disease and cavities, but it’s important to get routine professional cleanings (remember that phrase dental prophylaxis?) to remove buildup in places you can’t always reach.

What if I brush well but still have unhealthy gums?

A variety of factors can impact the health of your gums, including: smoking, diabetes, stress, clenching/grinding teeth, medication, and poor nutrition. Even with diligent brushing and flossing, some people can still develop periodontal disease. That’s why visiting a dentist and getting bi-annual checkups and cleanings is so important!
